MDA Telethon

On Monday September 3rd, 6 intrepid members of the Kasimar made their way to the channel 5 television station for this years Muscular Dystrophy telethon.

Your first officer had received notice that he had been scheduled for an on air interview at 10:40 am. But it was not to be. The national broadcast was still going at 10:45. At 11 am the national broadcast took a break allowing the local stations to make their appeal. Of course this threw the local stations off. They gave me a check to present and the MDA official told the emcee that there was an on air interview with the presentation. The emcee, however, had the wrong sheet and after the presentation the cameras went to another part of the studio and I was hustled off.

When it came time for us to man the telephones they put us in with the Shaw's check out tellers and many people didn't know the difference.

Arnold explained that even though we thought that things were messed up, those watching at home probably didn't notice a thing and the local telethon went on as smooth as could be. This was brought out when a friend of ours told us that she saw our interview and it was longer than a check presentation. So we figured out they had used last years interview. I guess your first officer did get interviewed after all.

While we were there Arnold was asked to run for food as the regular runner had not arrived. By the time the day had ended he put a total of 75 miles on his car.

While we might have thought things got a little crazy for a few minutes all went well and we had a good time at the telethon.

Hawking Meeting March 25

We gathered at 2 PM on that date after the first bar-b-que of the season.

1. The USS Kasimar had a blood drive on March 17th. Unfortunately on that day we had a blizzard so the turnout was low. There is talk about doing another one in the fall.

2. We will be doing the march of Dimes Walk-a-thon on May 6. This will be a Kasimar sponsored event. It starts at 8 AM.

3. We talked about the various fund raising drives for our 25th club anniversary in 2008.

4. Again we talked about the Challenger Center and helping there. Two Representatives from the club went to the center contact them, however, they had a bus there. We will go again.

5. We talked about a kit and rocket day.

6. We need to start on the Kasimar's 4th of July parade.

7. Can we put helm and nav at the 25th anniversary party?

8. Can we put a 25th anniversary book out with advertisers?

9. We should keep a log book with contact information for the various groups and people we deal with.

March 26 two of us went to look at various places in which we could hold the 25th anniversary party. Yhis was the day we also went to the Challenger Center mentioned above.

Hawking meeting February 25 2007

Four members of the Hawking met at one o'clock for the meeting of the science department. We discussed some of the projects that the Kasimar wil be participating in this year.

On March 10 the regular meeting of the USS Kasimar will be held at the Salvation army.

On March the annual blood drive will be held at the American Red Cross building.

Last year we participated in the March of Dimes walk. Because of this the March of Dimes has sent us some info and a sign up sheet for this years event. We will contact the club to see if they want to participate in this event again this year.

The 4th of July parade will be coming up in July. For the past two years we have participated in this event as a club. If we want to participate in this years event we should begin our plans now. We will need a trailer for out display (last year we took ops and con)

Last year we participated in the MDA Telethon. It will always be on the Labor day weekend. As a bulk of the telethon is done on the Monday of the weekend, and several people have already left the annual Labor Day camp out we hope that we can make plans for this years event.

We did a kite day in 2005. Sadly the weather was a problem. Afterward past CO Captain Libby said that this is something we might want to consider again. We discussed having such an event again trying to figure when a good time would be. Late July to mid August might be a good time. It was tablet to be discussed later.

Last year we participated in the Levant Old Home Parade and craft show. We discussed whether that is something we would like to do again this year. (There was a bit of a mix up as the times they told us to be there were not correct and we had to stand around for quite a time.) If we want to be part of this (and they would like us to return) do we do the parade and the craft show? Do we do just the craft show or do we sponsor a booth with games for the event? We tossed several ideas around. This was tabled to a later time.

We tossed several fund raising ideas around. Some designed to help a selected group such as the homeless shelter or a selected project such as a church pantry or clothing project. Some ideas were to collect pennies. Could we make a spaghetti supper to raise funds, or do something for the Ronald McDonald House like we some years ago?

Another topic discussed was crafts/ trek sales items. We tossed around several ideas. Possibly we could do a bake sale to raise funds for a charitable organization. Could we resume some sort of recruitment activity with Becky and Sharon when they do their craft show. We memtioned the PDRS form needs to be redone again as some statements in the current one have become outdated.

A lot of our talk centered around the Challenger Center. We hope that we can help this organization.

The day finished with a Pizza party and a Trek-Fest marathon. We all had a good time. We hope to do the same thing next month.

Science Department Hawking Meeting

Some of what's happening this year for the science department, called the Hawking shuttle for quick reference.

The Hawking meetings are designed to get the science department thinking about projects the Science department of the USS Kasimar can do as a department. We like to have projects that can said to have some science connection. Therefore the Muscular Dystrophy telethon, because funds go into medical research, a branch of the sciences, is a project we would look into. Not all projects are of such a serious science nature and that is why we do parades.

As always we try to allow the Kasimar to take the lead in projects. When no projects are forth coming we explore ways to help locally because it says in our club charter that we help others.

January 28, 2007

Our first meeting of the year was held at the home of D and S. The meeting stated out with a pot luck dinner followed by the meeting.

The first item was the MDA Mall walk scheduled to take place on February 11, 2007. The walk will take place at 9 AM and finish at 9:30 AM with a small reception afterwards where photos will be taken. This will be a Kasimar sponsored event. The event idea was brought to the group by the Chief Science Officer

The next item was the Kasimar blood drive to take place on March 17th. The Science Department tries to have a presence at the blood drive helping others. We encourage all science department personnel to try to make it to the blood drive to give blood or help with the drive. This year there has been some talk about joining in and being part of a state wide drive with other Star Trek clubs. Perhaps we can have a competition seeing who will collect the most blood.

At the last Kasimar meeting we talked about helping the Challenger Center. The center needs help in the form of Volunteers. Can the club help here? I encourage science department personnel to help if they can.

Last year the Hawking helped sponsor the Kasimar's participation in the annual March of Dimes walk. The science department helped sponsor a team last year. We discussed whether we wanted to sponsor a team this year. The vote was yes. Now we wait for the official dates to be sent to us.

We hope the Kasimar will participate in the annual 4th of July Parade. We will bring the subject up at one of the spring meetings.

Kite Day 2005 did not turn out as well as we would have liked as mother nature did not co-operate well. We discussed doing that again. Subject tabled to a later date.

We have talked about going to visit children at the hospital and what would the best times to do so. We also talked about doing another Ronald MacDonald dinner. Both were placed on the "to look into," desk.

In 2005 we had a 6 month read-a-thon. Is that something we could look into for 2007? The idea was a July to December contest. Tabled for further discussion.

Craft and collectable events could prove a place for us to place a display. Can we take ops and con along with a few Trek collectibles? We discussed this and will look into it further. The first show is in April.

The Levant parade and Old Homes Days are in September. Do we want to do this again? Can ops and con be brought to the school with various hand made display items?

The Trek Camp Out, MDA Telethon and Diabetes walk happen in September. As it was too early in the year for much discussion about these we just noted when they take place.

We also noted when the annual Toys for Tots events were along with bell ringing, angel tree and Santa mail Kasimar events would happen.

A. also spoke about a comic day. We will explore that further.

We talked about some Kasimar projects that were in the works, up dating the Bridge Manual, award pins-sashes vs pinning on a uniform. We also noted that we have several patterns for Trek uniforms and pseudo uniforms and that we should make members some uniforms. Also we are close to running out of our home made Trek items. We discussed making some more

The next Hawking meeting will be on Sunday 25th which will be a pizza party with Trek shows (original series) to follow. Bring your favorite soda and favorite pizza toppings. Pizzas will be home made.

Well the shuttle Hawking got a big surprise this past weekend. The shuttles Commander got elected to the position of First Officer of the USS Kasimar this was an interesting development. The new first officer goes into the position on February 10th.

I hope that I can do a good job. I do think I am qualified and I feel good. Better than I have for years. I have several ideas to try out so wee will see what happens.
